Area Activities

Serpentine Manor is just outside the quaint village of Wilderness, in the heart of the Garden Route, between George and Knysna. Wilderness is home to many great restaurants and cafe's. Other highlights include many stunning beaches, hiking, canoeing, bird watching, horse riding, trail running and mountain biking. The popular Wild Oats Market on Saturday mornings in Sedgefield (15 minutes drive).

Bird Watching

Serpentine Manor borders the Wilderness National Park and is situated in the heart of the Garden Route. It is a fascinating combination of rivers, lakes, estuaries and beaches, unfolding against the backdrop or lush forests and imposing mountains and as a result has rich and varied birdlife. Wilderness protects three major zones of indigenous forest, four types of Fynbos (wild shrubs), lakes and winding waterways.

Eilandvlei, Langvlei and Rondevlei are a series of lakes connected by the Touw River. These watery havens host a variety of aquatic species and have been proclaimed as a Ramsar site (wetlands of international importance). Visitors to Wilderness can spot five types of Kingfisher, the Grey Heron and Little Egret, the brightly coloured Knysna Loerie; Cape Eagle Owls and African Fish Eagle amongst many others!

Visitors can follow the many nature trails in the Wilderness National Park or spend time at the Malachite bird hide located on Langvlei or simply enjoy sitting on the verandah of the Vlei And Garden Suites to enjoy the birdlife of this beautiful area. From Kleinkranz to the Map of Africa, there are 5 excellent paragliding sites within a few minutes drive from Serpentine Manor. There are an additional two sites in Sedgefield - approximately 15 minutes down the coast. These range from easy coastal soaring to cross country thermals. There are a number of Paragliding operators in the area

Hiking and Trail Running

There are many hikes within the Wilderness National Park, including the numerous Kingfisher walks; the Cape Dune Molerat Trail and the Woodville Big Tree. There are also the Groeneweide Forest trails which start at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University grounds which is a 15minute drive on the back road to George from Serpentine Manor. The beautiful coastline between Wilderness and Sedgefield also offers many stunning beach walk options.

Mountain Biking

The back roads within the greater Wilderness area offer great cycling opportunities for the whole family. For the more serious cyclist, there are numerous cycling trails in the Outeniqua mountains and surroundings. Including the routes around the Garden Route Dam and the 7 Passes Road from Wilderness to Knysna.

Food and Entertainment

The Wilderness to Sedgefield area is host to numerous great restaurants, live music venues, craft beer, food and craft markets as well as having many artists that welcome people to their homes and studios to view their work.
